 WHAT IS THE ORIGINATION OF MARBURG VIRUS? The Marburg virus is believed to have originated from fruit bats in Africa. The first known outbreak of Marburg virus disease occurred in 1967, when laboratory workers in Marburg, Germany, who were exposed to infected African green monkeys, developed a severe hemorrhagic fever. The virus was subsequently named after the city where the outbreak occurred.
